What is Bubble Tea?
Bubble tea in many Asian countries is what soda is to the U.S. It originated in Taiwan in the early 1980s at a small tea stand for elementary school children. One stand in particular became popular for her tea when she started adding fruits to her tea, and the trend grew rampant. When adding this fruit flavor, the tea needs to be shaken to fully develop the unique flavor that many people have come to love. This process formed bubbles in the drink, coining the term “bubble tea”.
In 1983, Taiwan began to add tapioca pearls into the already famous drink. After shaking the tea, tapioca pearls were added to the top to float in the drinks, giving it a slightly chewy and sweet addition to an already amazing drink. These pearls are made of tapioca starch and have a texture similar to a gummy bear. The chewy, addictive texture of the tapioca balls and the delicious teas create a drink that people cannot seem to get enough of. Today, bubble tea comes in tea and smoothie form, with different color options of tapioca pearls. The flavors range from exotic fruits like lychee to a tried and true favorite like strawberry. Whatever the flavor you decide, you can be sure that your bubble tea will give you a flavorful experience like never before.
At Hammerhead Coffee, we use fresh fruits in our freezes and real concentrated fruit juices. We stay away from the artificial syrups and flavors found elsewhere to make you a drink that is just as natural as it is delicious!
